Her practice is known for its expressive vocal and bodily approach, driven by an endless curiosity and a seriously playful approach to the human voice. Annika has premiered several works composed for her, including pieces by Heinz-Juhani Hofmann and Miika Hyytiäinen, and has participated in interdisciplinary projects with artists from various fields. Additionally, she has composed and recorded several audio works for the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE. She has performed at events such as the Tokyo Wonder Site Experimental Festival, London's Grimeborn Festival of New Opera, Musica Nova Helsinki, Tampere Biennale, Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival, and Time of Music. The duo explores and creates acoustic string music – sonic landscapes, atmospheres, sketches and sound vignettes – by improvising, composing, and occasionally experimenting with non-idiomatic playing techniques. Their instrumentation ranges from violins and viola to the human voice. Hermanni Yli-Tepsa is a researcher in philosophy, student of pedagogy and musician (violin, double bass). In recent years he has focused on improvised, experimental and collaborative approaches to playing with string instruments. Besides occasional solo concerts and his work with a small string ensemble (with Aalto and Saara Viika), he also performs with the bands Fernetti and Juuso Paason tulevat käsitteet, and creates silent‑film accompaniments with the ensemble Seitsemäs taivas. Merimaija Aalto is a Helsinki based violinist, violist, and vocalist who enjoys navigating between musical styles and combining them with a sense of adventure. She is known for the ensemble AINON, the exuberant Finnish spiritual jazz project Oiro Pena, and the band Lyyti. As a performer, she is particularly fascinated by creating varied shades and contrasts with string instruments. The film seeks a middle ground between human and non-human beings while exploring ecological filmmaking and materialist films. The filmmaker conducted several experiments to find the best recipe to produce a movie with yeast, focusing on the intersection of art and science, including process-based experimentation and surface-based or cameraless filmmaking. These proved so successful that work on a film version began, with historian Terry Ramsaye (who around the same time published the seminal study A Million and One Nights: A History of the Motion Picture) coming onboard the production. Thirty Years of Motion Pictures, as the film was originally known (The March of the Movies was added later), tried to sum up every aesthetic and technical development till then, ran for some three hours, and was never supposed to be commercially released, only screened in connection with activities by the National Board of Review, as a fundraiser. Here’s what remains of this meta-moviemaking milestone, given an extra layer of beauty by the live music performance from Nika Son. ‘Thirty Years of Motion Pictures’ screening with Nika Son live score is a special collaboration between Metakino &amp; SOLA festival.
